Action verbs for resumes, grouped by what the bullet actually claims
A verb is not decoration; it tells the reader what kind of contribution to expect. "Responsible for" describes a job description. "Rebuilt", "cut", "negotiated", and "documented" describe a person. Pick the verb that matches what you actually did, then add the number.
Verbs by claim
Group your bullets by the kind of claim they make, then pick a verb from the matching group. If a bullet has no verb from any group, it is probably describing the role rather than your work.
You built something
Built, Designed, Implemented, Launched, Shipped, Automated, Migrated, Rebuilt
You improved a number

You led people or scope
Led, Coordinated, Owned, Directed, Mentored, Trained, Assigned, Chaired
You produced evidence
Analysed, Audited, Measured, Modelled, Tested, Reviewed, Verified, Forecast
You kept something running
Maintained, Operated, Supported, Monitored, Resolved, Troubleshot, Escalated
You communicated or negotiated

Rewrite the sentence, not just the first word
Swapping "Responsible for" for "Managed" leaves the same empty sentence. The fix is to add what changed and for whom.
- Weak: Responsible for customer support.
- Weak after a verb swap: Managed customer support.
- Strong: Handled 60–80 contacts per day across phone and chat, and wrote the escalation template the team still uses.
- Weak: Worked on the website redesign.
- Strong: Rebuilt the pricing page as three components, cutting median load from 4.1 s to 1.6 s.
One verb per bullet, in the past tense
Use past tense for completed work and present tense only for the role you still hold. Two verbs joined by "and" usually hide a second bullet that should stand alone.
Retire the filler verbs
Helped, assisted, participated in, and was involved with describe proximity to work rather than ownership. If you truly supported rather than led, keep the verb but state the scope: "Supported the audit fieldwork for 18 accounts" is honest and specific.
Questions about this page
- Are action verbs still necessary for ATS?
- They matter to the human reading the first screen. ATS matching keys on nouns — job titles, tools, qualifications — so verbs help readability rather than keyword matching.
- Should every bullet start with a verb?
- Nearly every one. A bullet that opens with a noun or an adjective usually reads as a description of the role instead of an achievement.
- Can I reuse the same verb twice?
- Once per role is ideal; twice across a page is tolerable. A page of "Managed" bullets suggests the work was undifferentiated.
