First resume with no experience: what to put on the page

A first resume is not an empty resume. Coursework, part-time jobs, volunteering, and self-directed projects are all evidence of the same three things employers screen for: reliability, learning speed, and working with other people.

A summary that carries a number

Second-year computer science student looking for a summer internship in backend development. Built a course scheduling tool used by 40 classmates and maintained the department’s study-group site.

Replace every figure with your own. If you never tracked the metric, use the scale you can defend — team size, volume per shift, contract size, or how long the situation lasted.

Keywords a student, first job search looks for

  • internship
  • coursework
  • team project
  • part-time work
  • volunteering
  • Python
  • Git
  • communication
  • time management

Use the ones that are true of your work, spelled the way the posting spells them. Skills belong in a plain list with one item per entry — icon rows and rating bars frequently extract as a single unreadable string.

Five bullets to adapt

  • Built a course scheduling tool in Python that 40 classmates used to pick sections each term.
  • Worked 15 hours a week in retail alongside a full course load for two years, including opening shifts.
  • Led a four-person coursework team, splitting work by module and running the weekly check-in.
  • Volunteered at a community tutoring programme, running weekly maths sessions for eight students.
  • Learned Git and code review by contributing two small fixes to an open-source project.

Order sections by evidence, not convention

With no paid experience, put Education first and then Projects, Part-time Work, and Activities. Once you hold a relevant internship, move Experience above Education; the reader wants the strongest evidence in the top third of the page.

Give each project a result

"Built a scheduling tool" is a description. "Used by 40 classmates each term" is a result. Users, adoption, a grade, a competition placing, or a bug fixed upstream all count.

Part-time work is experience

Retail, food service, and delivery jobs prove punctuality, customer handling, and working under pressure. Write them with the same shape as a professional role: hours, responsibilities, and one thing you improved or were trusted with.

Questions about this page

Can a first resume be one page?
It should be. With no long history to summarise, one page of specific evidence is stronger than two pages with filler such as "hardworking individual".
What if I have no projects at all?
Start one this week: a small tool, a documented analysis, or a volunteer task you can describe. Two weeks of real work produces a better bullet than any template phrase.
Should I list high-school details?
Keep the high school only if you are still studying or graduated within the last year. After that, the university entry alone is enough, with the relevant coursework beneath it.
