Teacher resume example with grade level, subject, and certification

School hiring is credential-first and grade-level specific. A resume that does not state the certificate area and the grade band in the first two lines gets sorted into the wrong pile.

A summary that carries a number

Secondary mathematics teacher certified in grades 7–12, five years teaching Algebra I and Geometry in a Title I district. Built a standards-aligned unit plan adopted by the department for incoming teachers.

Replace every figure with your own. If you never tracked the metric, use the scale you can defend — team size, volume per shift, contract size, or how long the situation lasted.

Keywords a teacher search looks for

  • teaching certificate
  • grade 7-12
  • mathematics
  • lesson planning
  • classroom management
  • IEP
  • formative assessment
  • differentiation
  • parent communication

Use the ones that are true of your work, spelled the way the posting spells them. Skills belong in a plain list with one item per entry — icon rows and rating bars frequently extract as a single unreadable string.

Five bullets to adapt

  • Taught five sections of Algebra I and Geometry, roughly 140 students per year, with co-taught inclusion sections.
  • Raised unit-test pass rates by rebuilding assessments around three formative checkpoints per unit.
  • Wrote and implemented IEP accommodations for eight students in collaboration with the special education team.
  • Ran weekly parent updates through the district portal, reducing unanswered grade queries to near zero.
  • Mentored two first-year teachers through observation cycles and lesson planning.

Certificate area is the first filter

State the certificate, the subject, and the grade band in the same line: "Teaching Certificate, Mathematics, Grades 7–12, State of [State]". Districts filter by subject and band before reading experience, so this belongs above the summary.

Write outcomes a principal can check

Avoid claiming score gains you cannot source. Safer, verifiable statements: number of sections, students served, curriculum you wrote, committees joined, and programmes you ran. Those are checkable in a reference call.

Show the non-teaching half of the job

Parent communication, IEP collaboration, department leadership, and coaching duties are the parts of the role that are hardest to hire for. One bullet each is enough to signal that you have done them.

Questions about this page

Should student teaching be on a teacher resume?
Yes for the first two years, under "Clinical Experience" with the school, grade level, cooperating teacher, and the subjects you actually taught. Drop it once you have a full year of lead teaching.
How do I list a certification that is in progress?
State it plainly: "Mathematics 7–12 certificate, expected March 2027". Do not list an unfinished credential as if it were held; districts verify against the state registry.
Do substitute teaching roles count as experience?
They count as classroom experience. Group long-term assignments as their own entry with the school and dates, and summarise day-to-day substituting in a single line beneath.
